Bird Friendly City Program Meeting
The Yukon Bird Club is delighted to sponsor the Bird Friendly City (BFC) program for Whitehorse. Nature Canada administers the BFC program nationally. Nature groups and municipalities are teaming up with Nature Canada to help make our urban environments are safer places for birds rather than a source of threats such as predation by domestic cats, window and car collisions and loss of key bird habitat. Find more information about the program at naturecanada.ca/.
BFC Whitehorse Working Group
The BFC Whitehorse Working Group includes representatives from the Yukon Bird Club and the City of Whitehorse. We hope other individuals and organizations will be involved and provide input as the program gains momentum. Eventually, the group will prepare an application to Nature Canada for BFC certification. There are many topics that the group could focus on. For now, four priorities have been identified:
- Bird-window collisions
- Cats and birds
- Pesticide use / management
- Bird habitat and bird viewing locations
A successful bird habitat and viewing location workshop was held in April, 2024 in Whitehorse with 42 attendees contributing important bird habitat and viewing locations in Whitehorse. These locations can be looked at in more detail by the YBC, city planners and other interested stakeholders. A PDF document listing what was heard at the meeting is provided below.
If you would like to learn more about the BFC initiative in Whitehorse or want to be involved in moving the project, please contact Glenn Rudman at glenn@yukonbirds.ca.
